A girls' football team has won the admiration of Elstree and Borehamwood's Mayor after battling through to the Nottingham finals of a national five-a-side tournament.
Paying tribute to the 15-year-olds from The Lair Youth Project, based at Lyndhurst School, Councillor Martin Heywood said: "These kids have got themselves together and formed a team and have done all sorts of things to raise sponsorship.
"Although they didn't win, they are the sixth-best team in the country.
"I want to congratulate them and thank them for their efforts."
The girls -- Emma Vauls, Christine McMahon, Nikki Rayner, Chi Sabah, Tracy Steadman and Becky Smith -- came sixth out of seven teams in a tournament held in the Midlands between July 17 and 19.
