I had the pleasure of taking a group of pensioners up to the Jim Mcdonald Centre at Hatfield.
The facilities that are provided for the elderly and youth I can only describe as wonderful. The people I took were able to relax and meet new people, listen to the entertainment , have lunch, visit the shop, play pool, snooker, cards and bingo.
These are just a few things that are available to the visitors. One member of the group even arranged a holiday with the centre, which will be their first for five years.
Form what I have read in the Borehamwood & Elstree Times, councillors should be disgusted with themselves to even consider the proposal of wasting any more money on the Three Ways centre.
This is a time when they, as councillors , have the opportunity to improve the welfare of not only the elderly, but also the youth of this area.
All they can think about is throwing money at something that has not worked and has cost the community a great deal of money.
The Three Ways is no more than a cheap drinking venue for a small number of people that are, in fact, members. It is not a community centre, or likely to be if it is run as at present. I would suggest that you use the money that is set aside to build a new day centre, to do that.
Of the sites there are, only two I can think of as being suitable: the Furzehill School site and Maxwell Park.
The Furzehill school site is the most central to the public transport and town centre. In addition, the gym area is modern. With the money that has been ring-fenced, this would promise to be ideal.
The rest of the site could provide flats for the elderly, as they have at Fairbanks Lodge just down the road.
I would like to put this proposal forward at the next council meeting.
