Elderly people at a Borehamwood residential home will soon be able to relax in a new sensory room if a fundraising campaign organised by staff is successful.

Six staff at The Mead, in Castleford Close, formed a committee two months ago with the aim of collecting £3,000 to buy equipment for the sensory room

The room, with special lights, soft music and massage equipment, will be designed to stimulate the senses and, in particular, help people with dementia.

So far the committee, called the Sensory Six, have raised around £2,000 through quiz and disco nights at the Green Dragon pub, in Leeming Road.

Treasurer Eileen Elcome said: "Quite a few homes have got these rooms now and they say the residents really benefit from them."

The committee has organised a sponsored walk around Borehamwood, starting at the Directors Arms pub, in Ripon Way, on Sunday, August 26.

A car boot sale will also be held next month, and planned events include a barbecue in September, a Hallowe'en party and a Fireworks night celebration.

The Sensory Six, including Nick Pryor, Pat Gossage, Carol Reynolds, Liz Hollow and Jan Manley, aim to reach the £3,000 target by the end of the year.

Anyone who would like to join the sponsored walk is asked to call The Mead on 020 8953 8573.
