A bright idea from Borehamwood police will help keep young children in Borehamwood safe on school trips.

In conjunction with the Community Shop in Leeming Road, traffic management police secured £900 to supply each of the ten primary and infant schools in Borehamwood and Elstree with 20 fluorescent bibs so children will be seen more easily when walking along the road.

Traffic management officer PC Andy Chittenden said: "Spring is the time of year when classes are taken on nature trails or other educational outings around their area, and by providing schools with these bibs children will be easily spotted by motorists and easily identifiable should they wander off."

The headteacher of Parkside Community Primary School in Aycliffe Road, Jon O'Connor, said he welcomed the scheme.

"Teaching staff often take groups of children out around on nature trails or history and geography trips.

"Although the children are closely supervised at all times, these colourful, fluorescent bibs will help ensure they are easily seen by drivers."
