Counter terrorism police have warned residents to be vigilant ahead of the Christmas period.

The Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU), which covers Hertfordshire, called on the public to be its “eyes and ears” as more people are expected to mix.

It added that, while there is no intelligence suggesting a specific threat to the region, the threat from terrorism remains “substantial”, which means an attack is likely.

ERSOU head Hannah Wilkinson said: “What we’re asking is simple. Stay alert and trust your instincts. If you see something that doesn’t feel right, tell a member of staff or a police officer. Don’t assume someone else will do it.

“We know people worry about wasting our time, but you absolutely aren’t. Your actions could save lives.

“You know your community, your town and your street better than anyone, and you know when something isn’t right.

“What we need you to do is trust your instincts. Let’s look out for each other this winter.”
