A burst water main has shut the main road through Shenley.

London Road was closed in both directions by the junction with Harris Lane last night (Tuesday) and remains closed today.

Affinity Water has dug across both sides of the road, while there is also some flooding.

It means there is no access into Shenley for drivers coming from the direction of Borehamwood via Green Street and Rowley Lane.

The closure caused traffic delays this morning with police called in at one stage.

Police warned drivers taking to the pavement or travelling the wrong way down nearby New Road, which is one-way, could be fined.

Hertsmere Police posted on Facebook: "We are aware of roadworks near London Road, Shenley this morning and have had numerous reports of cars being driven on the pavement and driving down a one way road - we are in attendance with body worn video recording and will be issuing tickets for any driving offences witnessed."

Signs have also been put up at the junction of New Road and London Road warning that CCTV is in operation.

Diversion signs are in place for drivers travelling into Shenley from both ends of the village.

One of those diversions is Radlett Lane, which is already being used as a diversion for drivers wanting to use Harper Lane. Harper Lane remains closed for repairs to a railway bridge following a car collision in late September.

There is access into Shenley, including to Shenley Primary School and Harris Lane, for drivers travelling from the direction of Black Lion Hill and the Porters Park Drive estate.

Affinity Water currently has a permit of until tomorrow (Thursday) to get the necessary repairs done in London Road.

But it is possible work and the closure will continue beyond then.
