Neighbours in a Borehamwood street lit candles outside their homes last week to commemorate the Queen’s passing.

Alex Jacobs, who lives in Bullhead Road, organised the community candle lighting as a “quiet sign of respect” for Her Majesty, who died on September 8.

Alex estimates around three quarters of her road took part in 'A Life Well Lit' after receiving support from social media and her neighbourhood Whatsapp group.

The event was suggested as a peaceful way to honour the life Britain's longest-reigning monarch.

At 8pm on Friday September 9, residents stood outside their homes with their candles, tealights, and lamps which stayed lit into the evening.

Alex said: “It was a nice thing to do without fuss. No clapping. No cheering. Just respect.”

Alex added: “The neighbours came out and asked each other how they were feeling. The news wasn’t completely expected but was shocking when it happened.”

Earlier this year, Bullhead Road hosted a street party to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, helping to raise around a £1,000 for local charities.

She hopes her neighbours will celebrate the coronation of King Charles III in the same spirit of togetherness.
