A new sign has been installed at Elstree Studios as the opening of two new stages grows nearer.

The illuminated ‘Platinum Stages’ sign has been fitted onto the roof of the new stages in Borehamwood, which have been described as “state-of-the-art” facility by the chairman of the board of directors at the studios.

Morris Bright, who is also leader of Hertsmere Borough Council – which owns the studios – said: “Seeing the name up there now, casting its light across our borough is 'the cherry on the cake' for this multimillion pound investment in the studios' future and our borough's potential.

"Our contractors have worked tirelessly to ensure this state-of-the-art facility is delivered to deadline and to the highest specifications, with the greatest possible care and dedication, and we are so very nearly there.”

It has been confirmed that Universal has taken on a five-year contract at the studios and are set to move in within weeks.

The name ‘Platinum’ was chosen by then mayor of Hertsmere Anne Swerling following a competition. Cllr Bright says it was selected because of its “significance” for Queen Elizabeth II, who has been celebrating her Platinum Jubilee this year.

Joining Cllr Bright for the unveiling of the new sign was current mayor of Hertsmere, John Graham, and Elstree Studios historian and Borehamwood Times columnist Paul Welsh, who played a key role in the campaign to save Elstree Studios in the 1990s.

The Platinum Stages is a £15.6 million project part-funded by Hertsmere Borough Council and the government's Getting Building Fund via the Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership.

As part of the deal, £100,000 per year from the rental income received by the council will be invested locally into creative industries, including local media and creative enterprise and initiatives.

The council says Platinum Stages will create hundreds of new jobs and apprenticeship opportunities.

Cllr Graham added: "This is an historic moment for Hertsmere, for all who have been involved in this project and for film and TV production in this country.

"The Platinum Stages is a wonderful way to celebrate our Queen and her many years of service to our country.

"We're looking forward to the next exciting chapter the installation of this sign represents for our studios."
