Flags have been raised across Hertsmere in support of the borough’s LGBTQ+ community.

The Pride Progress flag was raised outside Hertsmere Borough Council’s offices in Borehamwood on Tuesday by the mayor of Hertsmere.

Cllr John Graham was joined by council staff, councillors and colleagues from the NHS, Hertfordshire Constabulary and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Pride Progress is an updated version of the rainbow Pride flag, with flags also being raised in Aberford Park in Borehamwood, Parkfield in Potters Bar, and King George Recreation Ground in Bushey.

Cllr Graham said: “June commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots, an event which marked a turning point in the gay rights movement in America and worldwide.

“This year marks 50 years since the first Pride event in the UK and the month provides an opportunity to educate ourselves on issues and advocate for further change, but also to celebrate the community and how far LGBTQ+ rights have come.

“It was a pleasure to gather with colleagues from both the council and our partner agencies at this flag-raising event.”
