The eagerly anticipated Queen's Jubilee celebrations are almost upon and a host of events are taking place in and around Borehamwood to mark the historic occasion.

The Platinum Jubilee marks Queen Elizabeth's 70th year on the throne and she is the first British monarch to reach that milestone.

Celebrations are happening across the country over a four-day public holiday, with events from Thursday to Sunday.

We have rounded up some of the activities taking place locally in the Borehamwood area.

There will be two beacon lightings taking place on Thursday evening (June 2) – at Woodcock Hill in Borehamwood and at the King George V playing fields in Radlett.

The beacon lighting event at Woodcock Hill, off Vale Avenue, will begin at 8pm and end at 9.45pm.

The beacon will be lit at King George in Cobden Hill, Radlett (WD7 7JN) at around 10pm. Aldenham Parish Council, which is hosting the event from 5pm, is also putting on a funfair, music, and food. Advanced booking/a ticket is required. Entry is free.

The majority of the rest of the events will be taking place on Sunday June 5.

Unfortunately Sunday’s forecast does not promise sunshine with the Met Office currently predicting grey cloud with temparatures of around 17 degrees.

But with months of planning, organsiers of Jubilee events won’t be letting the weather dampen their spirits.

The biggest event in Borehamwood will be at Meadow Park where there will be live music and a fairground near the bandstand as part of the ‘Party in the Park’ celebrations.

The event will run from midday until 5pm (June 5) with people invited to bring their own picnic. There will also be free refreshments available.

Meadow Park’s festivities have been organised by The Rotary Club of the Studios of Elstree and Borehamwood, in partnership with Hertsmere Borough Council, Hertfordshire County Council, Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council, Lee Cliffe Big Local, and the Church of England.

There will also be street parties taking place, including in Cardinal Avenue and Bullhead Road in Borehamwood, and in Watling Street in Radlett.

St Nicholas Church in Elstree is hosting a service of Thanksgiving at 10:30am (June 5) followed by a free ‘Big Lunch’ from 12-2pm, which is open to everybody.

Ahead of the bank holiday, Hertsmere mayor John Graham said:“The Jubilee is a fantastic way to celebrate Her Majesty and our country. To support local celebrations, Hertsmere Borough Council created a grants programme of up to £500 to help those who wished to run events that celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in the borough.

“Wishing our communities across Hertsmere a wonderful weekend where we can all join together to mark this significant historic event.”
