There have been calls for police to increase patrols at a parade of shops after a spate of burglaries.

Convenience stores in Manor Way in Borehamwood have been broken into multiple times since the beginning of April, with alcohol and cigarettes stolen.

The One Stop has been targeted three times and Manor Way Food & Wine once.

One thief snatched £150 worth of cigarettes from behind the counter of One Stop on April 2 at around 5pm, before the same shop was broken into exactly a month later.

At around 1am on May 2, four people pulled down the shutters and smashed a glass door before stealing vodka worth £884.

The shop was targeted again at 2.49am on May 9, when the front door was smashed and cigarettes were taken.

And on May 12, at around 4am, the shutters and door of Manor Way Food & Wine were broken and cigarettes stolen.

Police say enquiries into the incidents are ongoing and confirmed no arrests have been made so far.

Borehamwood Kenilworth councillors Dan Ozarow and Rebecca Challice say they are pressing for an increased police presence after meeting shopkeepers.

The Labour councillors said in a statement: “We are calling on the police to step up both day and night-time patrols of the Manor Way shops after a spate of break-ins which have shocked the community.

“Having visited several of the shopkeepers and staff twice in recent days, we stand firmly with them at this concerning time. Residents have joined us in thanking the shop workers for remaining open and playing such an important role in the daily life of the local community.

“We have also discussed the matter with Hertsmere Borough Council’s community safety manager and can confirm that there is a fully operational CCTV camera at the corner with Arundel Drive that is monitored 24/7 and which has direct contact with the police control room.

“The council has also installed a new CCTV camera at the corner of the private service road as an additional safety measure.”

A Hertfordshire Constabulary spokesperson told the Borehamwood Times that officers are studying potential CCTV evidence and said additional patrols will take place in the area.

Residents are being asked to report to police any suspicious activity they may see or hear.
