A serious collision has shut the A1 by Borehamwood this morning (May 6).

The major road is closed northbound from Stirling Corner towards the junction with the M25.

Police have confirmed they are in attendance of a serious collision which is thought to have happened at around 4am.

According to traffic database Inrix, a car has crashed and caught fire.

Details about any casualties have not been confirmed at this stage but the road remains closed due to accident investigation work.

A statement from police said: "We're currently at the scene of a serious road traffic collision on the Barnet bypass road near Borehamwood.

"Closures have been put in place at Stirling Corner, Elstree Way and Ripon Way to allow emergency services to work at the scene.

"People are advised to please avoid the area and check before they travel."

The closure of the A1 is causing significant delays in this morning's rush hour.

National Highways has confirmed that drivers are being diverted via local routes, which likely means through Borehamwood.

There does not appear to be any access onto the A1 northbound by the Double Tree Hilton hotel, with the closure in place until further up the carriageway by Holmshill Lane.

As of 7.40am, the A1 is at a standstill southbound between Rowley Lane and Stirling Corner due to delays on the Stirling Corner roundabout, and queues are likely northbound between Apex Corner and Stirling Corner.

Elstree Way is much busier than usual this morning, with queues expected in both directions.

Queues are also very likely in the Well End area and across other parts of Borehamwood.

Furzehill Road and Barnet Lane towards Stirling Corner have been affected and traffic going towards Elstree is likely to build as the rush hour goes on.

Traffic is also very busy in Barnet Road towards Arkley and High Barnet as motorists avoid the A1 and Borehamwood.

Hendon Wood Lane remains closed due to roadworks.
