Roadworks lasting a month are likely to cause "significant delays" for motorists, a councillor has warned.

Traffic lights at a crossroads in Bushey are being refurbished with work scheduled to begin today (March 28).

The junction the work will be taking place is where Little Bushey Lane meets Hartspring Lane, Aldenham Road, and Bushey Mill Lane, which is near Costco.

Bushey North county councillor Laurence Brass said: "The county council tell me this is necessary because the existing signals are more than twenty years old and have become a maintenance liability.

"They will also improve the alignment of the crossings, to aid safety, and install tactile paving to help the visually impaired. The new equipment will be LED extra-low voltage, for energy efficiency."

Cllr Brass added: "The work will take quite a long time, and is scheduled to finish on April 29. Temporary signals will be in operation and pedestrian access will be maintained.

"Inevitably, this is likely to cause significant delays to journeys, especially at peak times. My colleagues and I will be monitoring progress and press the council and contractors to ensure the work is completed on time."

The middle two weeks of this refurbishment coincide with the Easter holidays (April 4-18) which means the work might not cause as much disruption that locals fear.

However, for the first and last week of the work, traffic in this busy part of Bushey is almost certainly going to be impacted badly, particularly during rush hour.

Due to the junction's proximity to the Hartspring roundabout, traffic on the A41 between Watford and Elstree could be impacted, potentially having a knock-on effect onto the M1 at junction 5.

Delays could also be longer than usual in Hartspring Lane from the direction of Radlett and it is likely there will be queues on all approaches into the junction where the work is taking place.
