Plans for a splash park in Borehamwood have been given the green light and there is hope it will be ready to open this summer.

The splash zone, which will include a variety of jets and fountains, will be built in Meadow Park as part of a wider regeneration of the park.

Hertsmere Borough Council's plans were approved by its planning committee at a meeting last night (February 10).

The council says the splash park will feature 23 in-ground jets from arching features to crawl under to large columns of water to run or jump through. There is also a Hula Spray, which forms a circular water jail, and a number of Hydro Blast’s including a fountain like spray in the centre which reaches 3.5 metres high.

It will be free to use with the council intending for the splash park to be open seven days a week between 10am and 6pm between the May bank holiday and September every year.

It will be situated between the toddler play area and multi-sports courts with changing facilities also set to be provided. A plant room will have to be created in order for equipment to be installed to operate the splash park.

Work will begin as soon as possible and environment councillor Seamus Quilty says the council is "working hard to get this amazing facility open for the summer".

He added: "Meadow Park is a key open space in the heart of Borehamwood and these additional improvements will create a great place for families with children of all ages to get outside and have fun.

"The splash zone has two distinct areas to allow different ages to play safely and have maximum fun."

The plans form part of a wider ongoing £2 million development at Meadow Park. Phase one saw a toddler play area completed along with a fitness zone and new bandstand.

The newly resurfaced tennis courts, basketball court and multi use games area is welcoming players with a BMX track and cafe also planned.

At last night's meeting, two locals raised concerns about parking and littering in and around the park.

Labour planning member Jeremy Newmark was among those who called for the council to consult with residents about the parking issues and called for enforcement at weekends.

The planning officer said a parking review is ongoing in Meadow Road.
