Primary school children have been showing their support for the environment by planting new trees at an allotment.

The pupils at Shenley Primary School joined forces with the allotment committee at Shenley Parish Council to create a new hedge and new line of trees at the Green Street allotments site.

The planting of more than 100 trees forms part of the million trees being planted nationwide to help celebrate Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee next year.

The trees have been donated by the Woodland Trust, along with stakes and guides and all the information needed to have successful planting sessions.

Children in years 3, 5 and 6 from Shenley Primary have visited the allotments and planted 30 trees each session.

The pupils all enjoyed digging the holes and planting the trees after learning the correct planting method, in particular supported by teacher Katherine Jacobs and Simon Gee from the allotment committee.

Each tree has a name attached so the children can return and watch over the development of their planting.
