Police officers in Hertsmere have been supporting a Hertfordshire-wide knife amnesty with hundreds of knives handed in.

Launched on Monday 15 November, Operation Sceptre, aims to reduce knife related crime by asking people to hand in unwanted knives anonymously at Watford, Hatfield, Stevenage police stations, as well as at temporary knife bins at local events across the county.

The Hertsmere safer neighbourhood team were out with knife bins at 18 locations including Leeming Road in Borehamwood, Watling Street in Radlett, and Darkes Lane in Potters Bar.

Safer neighbourhood team inspector Rachael Robertson said: "We are pleased to be able to support this national week of activity in Hertsmere.

"Throughout the week, a total of 408 knives were collected, including general kitchen knives.

"Officers, who have been out and about with knife bins across the borough, have been getting to know residents and sharing crime prevention advice with them.

"We also work with charity shops who are unable to resell knives that are handed into them so that we can safely dispose of them.

"Recorded knife crime in Hertsmere is very low and proactive work like this, while also engaging with the communities we serve, helps to ensure that Hertsmere remains a safe place to live and work."
