A senior councillor has welcomed the news that a data centre will be built in Borehamwood.

Plans for a 55,000 square metre data site in York Crescent were given the green light by Hertsmere Borough Council's planning committee last week.

The data centre, which will bring more than 100 jobs, will be stationed on the former Sainsbury's distribution depot and within the Elstree Way employment area.

Councillor Caroline Clapper, deputy leader of the borough council and portfolio holder for property and economic development, said: "This development once again demonstrates that Hertsmere is open for business and an attractive location for companies of all sizes and sectors.

"It comes as nearby Sky Studios Elstree, which is set to create 2,000 jobs, is starting to taking shape, and the two new soundstages at Elstree Studios, which will create at least 800 jobs, is under development.

"I welcome this news of further employment in the borough and look forward to seeing the plans take further shape."

As part of the planning permission granted last Thursday, two newly-built warehouses will be demolished, however the vast majority of materials are said to going to be reused.

At the meeting, members heard that since a decision to defer the application was made in April, the applicants have agreed to contribute towards a public cycle hire scheme.

Five times as many photovoltaic panels originally proposed will be placed on the roof of the data centre to provide solar energy.

The project is a partnership between Pure Data Centres and Panattoni.
