A mother has slammed a Barnet school after her son was allegedly exposed to racist and sexual content during online lessons.

Suzi Ewo said her 11-year-old boy, who went to St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School, was in a lesson on Zoom when someone “bombed” the meeting with no video and played music with racial slurs.

The mother-of-four claimed that a few days later the same lesson was again interrupted by someone gaining access but this time they played sexually explicit content.

She said it was believed to be a child from another school, but following the incidents in late January her son was not himself and needed counselling.

“He hated going to school from there onwards,” Suzi said.

“He would cry every day before school. We had horrendous mornings."

Her boy has since been removed from St Catherine’s, which she claims has helped, but Suzi believes her complaints to the school are not being properly considered.

“It’s shocking,” she said. “Even up till now the school is not entertaining my complaints."

Suzi, who is a senior civil servant, has since set up a funding page for solicitors to liaise with the school, council and Ofsted.

She said she wants to seek clarity around online safety and sex education at the school.

The Barnet mother thinks that Zoom is not the right platform for teaching in schools and argues that Microsoft Teams is more secure, although concedes no platform is 100 per cent safe.

Her page has so far garnered £647 in donations.

When the school was contacted for comment, the chair of governors Dr A Errico said: “The school is unable to comment on individual cases.”
