The list of candidates vying for seats on a range of councils next month has been published.

In Hertsmere, there is a full election for seats at Hertfordshire County Council, along with a number of delayed by-elections at both borough and parish council level due to the pandemic.

We've rounded up the elections scheduled to take place on May 6 in our area and who is standing where.

Hertsmere Borough Council

In Hertsmere, there will be two by-elections for a seat at Hertsmere Borough Council - one in Borehamwood and one in Bushey.

The election in Borehamwood will be in Kenilworth ward and will be to fill the seat of Conservative councillor, Cynthia Barker, who died in September.

A familiar name on the list of candidates vying to fill the vacant seat is Labour's Dan Ozarow, who will be hoping it will be third time lucky, after two unsuccessful attempts to win a seat in Kenilworth in recent years.

There will also be a by-election in Bushey North following the departure of former Hertsmere Liberal Democrat leader Andrew Melville, who resigned from his position in February.

Hertfordshire County Council

The Hertfordshire County Council election takes place on May 6, with existing councillors and new candidates vying for a place on the council for the next four years.

One county councillor is elected to represent an area of Hertfordshire – there are 78 in total – and they take on a host of responsibilities, on behalf of residents.

Out of these 78 areas, seven are in Hertsmere, including in Borehamwood. All seven seats are currently represented by Conservative councillors and the county council is also run by the Conservatives.

In Borehamwood, we are guaranteed to see two brand new county councillors representing the town.

The county council has a responsibility for a number of Hertfordshire’s services, including the county’s schools, social care, recycling, public transport like buses, and roads.
