Borehamwood's biggest park is in line to receive further improvements after Hertsmere Borough Council reaffirmed its support for a £2m scheme.

The council's Executive committee gave the green light to move forward with phase 2 of the Meadow Park regeneration.

So far, £750,000 has been spent with two new children's play areas created, including a space specifically for toddlers.

Children can now also enjoy innovative interactive play features such as the Sutu sports wall and dance area.

The council has much more planned including a splash park, but this will not be ready until at least 2022.

The Meadow Park plans for this year do include the refurbishment of sports courts, including bringing the tennis courts up to Lawn Tennis Association standard.

The multi-use games areas will also be refurbished along with the basketball court, and a temporary car park, which breached planning permission, will be reinstated as a sports court, the council's head of street scene Ian Kershaw confirmed at the meeting on Wednesday.

An interactive TORO court will also be created.

The former bowls club pavilion has been leased out to a nursery for 15 years.

A cafe and/or kiosk will be created in the pavilion, along with a public toilet serving the park.

A BMX track has permission to be built and this will be funded by the Leecliffe Big Local partnership, which has funding from the National Lottery to invest in this area of Borehamwood.

A £60,000 bandstand, funded by Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council is also to be built.

There are plans to remodel and refurbish the park's car parks, to create 183 spaces in total, as well as construct a new tree-lined and more inviting entrance into Meadow Park from Brook Road.

More CCTV is also proposed.

The Meadow Park scheme was meant to be completed this year but has been delayed by the Covid pandemic.

The council's portfolio for environment, Cllr Seamus Quilty, said during Wednesday's meeting: "This council is behind this scheme and it will deliver the scheme. We want to make this a jewel in the crown of Borehamwood."

Executive member Caroline Clapper added: "I think this is going to make a tremendous difference to the residents. I think this is a huge investment from the council in Borehamwood.

"As the portfolio holder for leisure, culture, health, I think there are benefits of this open green space for the physical health and very much mental health of our residents and our children. It’s just going to be incredible so I’m extremely supportive of this."

The council is exploring the opportunity of match funding to help bring costs down, but a lot of the money invested has come from section 106 monies, which is provided by housing developers to invest in infrastructure.
