Just over 600 people have been slapped with coronavirus fines by Hertfordshire police since the pandemic began, new figures show.

Data released by the National Police Chief’s Council shows the county’s police force issued 612 fixed penalty notices for breaches of the coronavirus regulations between March 27, 2020 and February 14 this year.

They included four people being fined for holding a gathering of more than 30 people, while 18 were fined for flouting face covering rules.

Partygoers who gathered to celebrate a wedding anniversary were collectively fined nearly £15,000 earlier this month.

Police were called to reports of a gathering in Devereux Drive, Watford, at around 8.30pm on Sunday, February 14.

Officers discovered 18 people inside the address celebrating and issued them all with an £800 fine for breaching lockdown restrictions before sending them away.

Police slapped a woman with a £10,000 fine after she organised a party of more than 100 people during lockdown.

Inside the property were around 150 people, along with music equipment such as amplifiers and a DJ set which was seized.

A 22-year-old woman from London was found to be the organiser of the event and was handed a £10,000 fine for breaching coronavirus restrictions.

On attendance, they found around 40 people on board a boat set up for a rave, with DJ equipment, a bar and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) canisters.

Before Christmas, officers were called to different vessels nearby on the River Lea on Friday, December 11 and again on Sunday, December 13.

They attended and dispersed more than 100 people from the scene.

On Thursday, December 17, local officers from the Broxbourne Safer Neighbourhood Team attended the river intending to serve a closure order on the vessels involved.
