The second mass vaccination centre in Hertfordshire has opened today in a push to make more vaccination slots possible.

While smaller vaccination centres have opened in the local area, some residents might be asked to book slots at Hertfordshire’s mass vaccination centres.

Avanti Meadows Primary School, a new school in Bishops Stortford, will utilise its unused space as a Covid-19 mass vaccination centre from today (February 1).

The school was set to first open in the September 2020 Autumn term, but the school is now expected to open by September 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Instead of leaving the grounds unused, Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust (HCT) is using its car park and the school itself to administer the vaccine.

Elliot Howard-Jones, HCT chief executive, said: "Everyone at HCT and in our partner organisations has been working very hard in the lead up to opening these centres this week.

"We can now welcome local people in the prioritised age groups with confirmed appointments to receive their vaccine, along with health and social care workers from across our area.

"This represents a big step forward in helping to beat the Covid-19 pandemic. My sincere thanks go to our project team and our school-age immunisation team who are working around the clock to deliver this programme."

Robertson House in Stevenage was one of seven 'superhubs' to open in England back in January.

While the two mass vaccination centres can handle a larger capacity of patients a day, there are also several vaccination sites in the Watford area, including:

• Watford Health Centre for practices in Watford town centre

• Sheepcot Surgery for practices in North Watford

• Colne Surgery for practices in Rickmansworth and Chorleywood

• Bridgewater House for practices in Watford and Garston

• Allum Hall in Borehamwood for practices in Hertsmere

Some community pharmacies in Borehamwood, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead are also now offering people the coronavirus vaccine.

Covid-19 vaccinations are only available by appointment, either following an invitation from a person’s own GP practice or a letter enabling someone to choose to use the national booking system.

Currently the vaccine is being offered to people who live or work in care homes, people aged 80 and over, NHS front line staff and people over 70.
