Roadwork barriers in two shopping streets are to be replaced with "attractive" planters, Hertfordshire County Council has said.

The council introduced social distancing measures to a number of its towns and villages earlier this year, including in Borehamwood and Radlett.

Designed to give more space to pedestrians, the measures involved closed off several parking spaces in Shenley Road and Watling Street.

These spaces have been blocked off by barriers but the barriers will now be replaced with planters.

No parking spaces currently blocked off are expected to be brought back into use when the planters are installed. Spaces are likely to be reinstated when social distancing measures are dropped altogether.

The planters are scheduled to be installed in Borehamwood from Monday December 7, and in Radlett the following week.

The work has been made possible after the council successfully bid for money from the Department for Transport's emergency active travel fund.

Cllr Phil Bibby, cabinet member for highways and environment, said: "The social distancing measures in Hertfordshire have played an important role in giving visitors to our towns the confidence to use shops, cafes and restaurants safely.

"This, in turn, has helped local businesses and the local economy during this difficult time.

"The changes we’re making now will make the town centre look more welcoming and encourage people to come back to our town centres, as the national restrictions are eased and we move into Tier 2, and to take advantage of the fantastic range of local shops and business that Hertfordshire has to offer."
