Gyms and hairdressers will reopen across the whole of England when lockdown ends, the Prime Minister has said today.

Boris Johnson has outlined the new measures to control coronavirus in England through the winter, with the whole country facing tiered restrictions until the end of March from December 2.

Every area of the country will go into one of three tiers - the government is expected to announce on Thursday which tiers each area will fall into.

But Mr Johnson gave assurances today that places like gyms, swimming pools, barbers, salons, and beauty salons will be allowed to open, even in places in Tier 3 which have the tightest restrictions.

In Tier 1, classes and organised adult sport can take place outdoors, but people must follow the rule of six indoors.

Indoor classes and organised adult sport cannot take place in Tier 2 or 3 if there is interaction with different households.

In Tier 3, classes and organised adult sport can take place outdoors, but people are advised to avoid higher-risk contact activity.

The Prime Minister said the new tiers would be tougher than the tiered system before lockdown, after Government scientific advisers said the previous regime did not do enough to tackle the virus.

Mr Johnson said: "From next Wednesday people will be able to leave their home for any purpose and meet others in outdoor public spaces, subject to the rule of six, collective worship, weddings and outdoor sports can resume, and shops, personal care, gyms and the wider leisure sector can reopen.

"But without sensible precautions, we would risk the virus escalating into a winter or New Year surge."
