Police are exploring the possibility that a boy may not have been shot where he was found seriously injured.

Hertfordshire Constabulary has told the Times that detectives investigating an attempted murder are “keeping an open mind” on where the shooting may have taken place.

On the evening of Tuesday August 4, the emergency services were called to the Ripon Park area of Borehamwood following reports of a shooting.

A 16-year-old boy was found with a gunshot wound to his chest and he was rushed to hospital.

Police said last week it is believed he has sustained life-changing injuries.

Since then, police have been carrying out extensive enquiries in Manor Way, Ripon Way, and Cranes Way, into the shooting.

Yesterday evening, police returned to the area exactly a week from when the boy was found injured to speak to people passing through.

Through their enquiries, it appears police have not ruled out that the boy may have been shot elsewhere.

A police spokesperson said: "Officers are keeping an open mind and looking into the possibility that the gunshot wound may not have been sustained in the location where the victim was found.

"Witnesses and anyone with information are still urged to come forward. Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who might have caught the incident on dash cam."

Anyone with information can report online at herts.police.uk/report, or call 101, quoting reference crime reference 41/62014/20.

In the hours after police discovered a boy had been shot, Hertsmere Detective Inspector Michael Macbeth said: "I understand news of this incident will be alarming, I want to reassure the community that we are investigating the circumstances surrounding this and doing all we can to locate those responsible.

"We are treating this incident as attempted murder, with the investigation being led by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit.

"We are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who has information about what happened to contact us.

"Were you in the area around the time of the incident? Did you see something suspicious? Do you have CCTV of the area which caught something that could help with our enquiries? If so please get in touch."

Despite a search of Borehamwood on the night of August 4 involving armed police, dog units, and the police helicopter, police could not trace their suspect.
