THE ROAD is now open after emergency services were called to a collision where a child was hit by a car in Maryport.

Cumbria police along with the North West Ambulance service were called at about 10.35am this morning after reports of a child being hit by a vehicle on Mealpot Road.

The child has been taken to hospital and is said to be in a serious condition.

A spokeswoman for North West Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 10.36am today (August 5) to reports a male had been hit by a car on Mealpot Road, Maryport.

"We sent an air ambulance, two paramedics, a community paramedic and an ambulance to the scene.

"It was a male child who is about 9-years-old.

"He has been taken to hospital in a serious condition."

A spokesman for Cumbria police said: "Police were called at 10.43am today following a collision on Mealpot Road, Maryport.

"Involved in the collision was a silver Rover and a pedestrian - a 9-year-old boy.

"The boy suffered significant injuries. He has been taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle."
