One of Watford FC’s greatest players felt it was “inevitable” that the club would be relegated from the Premier League after their match against Arsenal.

Hornets legend Luther Blissett said the club gave themselves “too much to do in too short a time”, with the club having ended up in the relegation zone heading into their final game of the season.

Despite a spirited second-half display in their 3-2 defeat away at the Emirates Stadium, Watford will now be heading down to the Championship next season.

Blissett, who scored who scored 186 goals in 503 games for Watford, said the game was “disappointing in the end”.

Speaking to Mayor Peter Taylor during their weekly live quiz on Facebook on Sunday evening, Blissett said: “It (relegation) was inevitable I think. Once Watford got beat by City the way they did it was always going to go this way.

“We can feel as sorry as we like but it is of our own making. The season is 38 games and you can’t wait until the last game before you put in a performance.

“The performance (during the Arsenal game) was ok but the team didn’t take their chances and sadly that’s what happens.

“They gave themselves too much to do in too short a time to do so."

Watford have just six weeks to prepare for next season in the Championship, with a number of big issues to address following a season in which they won just eight games and sacked three head coaches.

The club join Bournemouth and Norwich in being relegated to the Championship, with the season set to begin on September 12.
