OLD Colwyn promenade has fully reopened after six months.

The prom was closed as part of £1.6million works, funded by Welsh Government, to improve the sea defences and active travel route at Splash Point by Old Colwyn Arches.

The Conwy County Borough Council (CCBC) project included installing a rock barricade to protect the vulnerable Victorian seawall at the eastern end of the promenade, as well as the A55 and national railway bridges, from the risks posed by severe weather. The works also included improvements to the active travel route, shared by pedestrians and cyclists and disabled parking.

The works have also include disabled parking

Cllr Greg Robbins, cabinet member for environment and transportation, said:“There’s some finishing touches, including lampposts and benches, which will be done in the next few weeks. Delivery has been delayed due to Covid-19, but we didn’t want residents to have to wait any longer to get access to the promenade. We’d like to thank the local community for their patience while we’ve carried out this work.”

Bike parking has been thought of too

Last month, CCBC also revealed it had secured a further £6.075m in funding from to continue work on the Old Colwyn coastal defence scheme as part of Welsh Government’s Resilient Roads fund, which supports recovery from the effect of storms and improves routes for pedestrians and cyclists.

This additional money will allow the Council to extend the coastal defences and promenade improvements west towards Porth Eirias.
