THE fire at a landfill site at Lower Compton, near Calne, is now out and the nearby recycling centre is open for business as usual.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Council said: "The fire was on the landfill site and was reported at 5am the fire service attended and the site has now been handed back to Hills. There was no impact on services."

Earlier today the fire service warned people to keep their windows such.

A spokesman for Hills Waste said the fire on its landfill site was out by 7.45am and had not affected the recycling centre.

The spokesman said: "A member of Hills Waste Solutions’ staff detected a fire on the Lower Compton landfill site at 5.00am Tuesday 26 May.

"The Fire & Rescue service attended the incident and Hills’ employees were also on site to assist. The fire was quickly brought under control and the Fire Service handed the site back to Hills at 7.45am.

"The Lower Compton landfill is now open again and there has been no personal injury or damage to property on site as a result of the fire.

"The Lower Compton household recycling centre was not affected by the incident."
