FIRE crews are battling a blaze at a recycling site in Compton Bassett, near Calne.

A spokesman for the fire service said it was creating a lot of smoke and people living nearby are advised to keep their windows closed.

Wiltshire Council announced last week it was re-opening recycling centres including the one at Lower Compton.

The council said: "Following updated government guidance we are reopening 9 of our household recycling centres from Monday 18 May. From Monday 18 May Lower Compton HRC will be open - Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday: 9:30am to 4:30pm."

A spokesman said this morning that despite the fire the centre was still open.

The nearby landfill site owned by Hills has suffered a number of fires in recent years and some have lasted for days.

In April 2018 a similar fire at the landfill site burnt through the night and into the following day. There was a repeat in 2019.
