Coronavirus deaths in three boroughs have remained low for a second week in a row, when you compare the figures to weeks gone by.

The latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has been released and allows us to analyse the number of people in Watford, Hertsmere, and Three Rivers who have passed away in recent weeks.

The most recent week of data (week ending May 8) shows the number of reported coronavirus deaths in Watford and Hertsmere is identical to the previous (week ending May 1) with seven and 12 deaths reported respectively.

In Three Rivers, figures show a decline in the number of Covid 19 deaths (four) compared to 15 the previous week.

The graph below shows the number of Covid-19 deaths over the past five weeks in each of the three boroughs (April 5 - May 8).

Watford

  • There have been a total of 101 deaths of people living in Watford involving coronavirus.
  • Watford has the second highest coronavirus death rate per 10,000 population in Hertfordshire, only behind Hertsmere.
  • There have been 28 confirmed deaths involving coronavirus that have taken place inside a Watford care home. This does not include care home residents who have died outside of a care home.
  • In the first ten weeks of the year (pre Covid-19), there was on average 3.4 care home deaths a week across Watford. In the last nine weeks, there has been on average 11.4 deaths care home deaths a week across Watford.
  • There are a total of 857 care home beds in Watford. Data from Hertfordshire County Council shows there have been 102 deaths (all causes) of care home residents in Watford since Covid-19. This is a death rate of 11.9 per cent.

Hertsmere

  • There has been a total of 164 deaths of people living in Hertsmere involving coronavirus.
  • Hertsmere has the highest coronavirus death rate per 10,000 population in Hertfordshire.
  • There have been 38 confirmed deaths involving coronavirus that have taken place inside a Hertsmere care home. This does not include care home residents who have died outside of a care home.
  • In the first ten weeks of the year (pre Covid-19), there was on average 4.8 care home deaths a week across Hertsmere. In the last nine weeks, there has been on average 15.9 deaths care home deaths a week across Hertsmere.

Three Rivers

  • There has been a total of 74 deaths of people living in Three Rivers involving coronavirus.
  • Three Rivers has a death rate of around 6 per 10,000 population in Hertfordshire, which is mid-range and on par with Dacorum and St Albans.
  • There have been 14 confirmed deaths involving coronavirus that have taken place inside a Three Rivers care home. This does not include care home residents who have died outside of a care home.
  • In the first ten weeks of the year (pre Covid-19), there was on average 3.7 care home deaths a week across Three Rivers. In the last nine weeks, there has been on average 7.3 deaths care home deaths a week across Hertsmere.

National

  • NHS England has announced 174 further deaths of patients in hospitals who had tested positive for coronavirus, including a seven-year-old with known underlying health conditions.
  • This takes the number of Covid-19 deaths in English hospitals to 24,913, including 336 at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
  • ONS weekly deaths data for England shows of all deaths occurring up to 8 May (registered up to 16 May), 37,154 involved Covid-19. 
  • Coronavirus-related deaths in England and Wales over a seven-day period have fallen by more than a third in the space of a week, new figures show.
  • There were 3,930 deaths registered in the week up to May 8 mentioning "novel coronavirus", the ONS said - this accounted for 31.1 per cent of all deaths during those seven days.
  • The latest weekly figures represent a drop of 2,105 deaths (34.8 per cent) from the previous week, when there were 6,035 deaths registered.
  • The ONS said the early May bank holiday had affected the number of registrations of deaths from all causes, with 88 deaths registered on May 8 compared with 2,950 the previous Friday.
  • Today's ONS figures show that 121,002 deaths were registered in England and Wales between March 21 and May 8.
  • This was 49,575 more deaths than the average for this period in the previous five years. Covid-19 was responsible for 37,187 of these excess deaths.
  • The ONS said there were a total of 9,980 coronavirus-related care home deaths registered up to May 8 in England and Wales.
  • But head of health analysis at the ONS, Nick Stripe, believes around 15,000 deaths of care home residents have taken place up to May 15 across England and Wales.
  • This is based on the ONS data up to May 8, separate ONS analysis which shows deaths of residents in hospitals up to May 1, and death notifications from providers to the Care Quality Comhission and Care Inspectorate Wales up to May 15.
  • There were 1,369 death notifications made to the CQC in the week ending May 15, and around 3,500 Covid-19-linked deaths of care home residents in hospitals, up to May 1.
