A map revealing the number of coronavirus deaths in every postcode of the country shows at least two lives have been lost in every ward in Hertsmere.

Data released on Tuesday by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that Hertsmere was the worst affected region for coronavirus in the whole of Hertfordshire - largely due to the number of care home residents who have died (66 as of April 24).

The national picture may be improving with hospital deaths down and Prime Minister Boris Johnson stating we are past the peak, but we cannot forget the pain and hurt this virus has brought upon thousands of families around the country.

And this newly released map by the ONS helps provide a picture of where exactly in Hertsmere has been most affected by the pandemic.

In total, this map pinpoints the deaths of 100 Covid-19 patients from the borough who died between March 9 and April 17, with deaths registered up until April 18.

The figures show of those living in Borehamwood only, there have been 28 deaths where either coronavirus was the underlying cause of death or Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

Cowley Hill ward has recorded the most deaths with 14 followed by Kenilworth with seven.

The postcodes of Elstree and Aldenham have recorded 10 deaths together, while eight people living in Radlett have died, according to the ONS figures.

Hertsmere, with a population of 104,000 in 2018, currently has a Covid-19 death rate of 95 per 100,000 people, which is higher than Watford (80), Barnet (92), Enfield (91) and St Albans (43) but less than Harrow which has a rate of 115 Covid-19 deaths per 100,000 people.

The average across England and Wales is 36.2.

Nick Stripe, head of health analysis at ONS, has added that people living in more deprived areas in England and Wales have experienced COVID-19 mortality rates more than double those living in less deprived areas.

The age-standardised mortality rate of deaths involving COVID-19 in the most deprived areas of England was 55.1 deaths per 100,000 population compared with 25.3 deaths per 100,000 population in the least deprived areas.

These figures may indicate why Cowley Hill in Borehamwood has reported at least double the amount of any other ward in the town - with Cowley Hill ranked among the top 10 per cent most deprived areas in the country and highest in Hertfordshire, according to the latest ‘Indices of Multiple Deprivation’ (IMD) data for 2019.
