Pedestrians are being urged to use a railway bridge sensibly to ensure social distancing can be followed.

Tony de Swarte has raised concerns about whether social distancing can be adhered to on the bridge in Allum Lane near Elstree & Borehamwood train station.

The bridge is incredibly useful for those walking from Borehamwood town centre towards Deacons Hill Road and Elstree and vice versa.

Mr de Swarte says because the pathways on both sides of the bridge are too narrow, and there are barriers, it is "impossible" to self-distance if someone is approaching you.

He believes the best course of action is to for pedestrians walking towards Borehamwood town centre to walk on one side of the bridge, and pedestrians walking away from the town centre to walk on the other side - therefore avoiding people walking into each other, and breaking the government rules on being at least two metres from someone outside of your household.

But to put this plan into action and alert pedestrians in the area, he called for some signposts to be put up which clearly state the new restrictions on the bridge.

He has been in touch with county councillors and Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council, as well as Hertsmere Borough Council.

Although this would usually be under Hertfordshire County Council's jurisdiction, this afternoon (Friday) the borough council has taken the decision to put up signs on the bridge, which members of the public are urged to obey, to help minimise the spread of coronavirus.

The signs warn that the footpaths are currently one-way to ensure social distancing and prevent the spread of coronavirus.
