- The number of UK hospital patients to test positive for coronavirus and have died has risen to 17,366, the Department for Health has announced.

- This number represents an increase of 852 deaths since yesterday's update.

- Not all of these reported deaths happened in the last 24 hours.

- The Covid-19 related death toll at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust has risen to 177.
- ------
- New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show there were 1,662 deaths involving Covid-19 in England and Wales registered up to April 10 that occurred outside hospitals.
- ------
- Of these:
- - 1,043 took place in care homes
- - 466 in private homes
- - 87 in hospices
- - 21 in other communal establishments, and
- - 45 elsewhere
- The equivalent figure for hospitals deaths over this period is 8,673.

- Meanwhile the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCA) has become the latest medics' union to criticise the lack of adequate personal protective equipment (PPE), with its head saying doctors should not treat patients without proper equipment.

- Professor Ravi Mahajan said in a statement none of the RCA's members should risk their safety to provide care for pandemic victims.
