Small businesses are being urged to apply for 'lifeline' grants of up to £10,000 that could keep them afloat during the coronavirus crisis.

More than 1,000 enterprises around the town have already received payments issued by the Government under three grant schemes delivered by Watford Borough Council.

These grants could prove a vital lifeline to business owners and help retain important jobs within the town.

But there are still some eligible businesses that have not yet come forward.

The council is urging these businesses to complete the electronic form on the council website at www.watford.gov.uk/businesses-covid as soon as possible.

The one-off grant schemes are worth £10,000 or £25,000 depending on the size and type of the business:

  • Small business grant funding of £10,000 is available for all businesses in receipt of small business rates relief
  • Grant funding of £10,000 is available for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses with premises with a rateable value below £15,000 that do not receive small business rates relief
  • Grant funding of £25,000 is available for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses with premises with a rateable value of £15,000 to £50,999

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor has said: “I am acutely aware of how difficult it is for local businesses at the moment.

“I hope that this can alleviate some of the pressure they are under currently.

“With the council, the local Chamber of Commerce and the Watford BID, we have a strong support network in place for our business community, any business in need of support should get in touch.”

Three Rivers District Council, Dacorum and Hertsmere Council are also encouraging businesses to apply for their support schemes.
