A man has been convicted of actual bodily harm following the death of 69-year-old Sivaguru Sabanathan in Harrow in 2017.

Nimal Ratnasingam, 45, of Pinner, was found guilty following a trial which concluded at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday, February 14.

He was found not guilty of manslaughter.

He will be sentenced at the Old Bailey in March, on a date to be confirmed.

The court heard that at around 6.30pm on Sunday, August 20, 2017, Sivaguru entered a shop on Northolt Road in Harrow.

Shortly afterwards, Ratnasingam entered the store and while at the counter an argument ensued between the two.

The dispute became increasingly agitated and Ratnasingam put his hand to Sivaguru’s throat and pushed him.

Sivaguru was thrown backwards out of the shop and directly onto the hard concrete pavement.

He was knocked out and remained unconscious for a short time.

The defendant and a member of the public dragged him back into the store and he was helped by other members of the public until officers arrived.

By the time police were on scene, Sivaguru was sitting up on the floor and he was helped to his feet.

Officers walked him back to his address and into his flat.

The following morning, Sivaguru’s daughter found him in bed and presumed he was asleep, but when she tried to rouse him later was unable to do so.

She called an ambulance and he was immediately taken to hospital. He never regained consciousness and died on August 24.

A post-mortem examination found his death to be a traumatic brain injury.

Ratnasingam was identified and arrested on August 25.
