A major street resembled more of a muddy river this morning after a water main burst.

Water began gushing down Watling Street in Radlett earlier today (Friday).

A video taken at 7am showed drivers making their way slowly through the water with water spraying above the wheels of their vehicles.

Pavements were shut off due to the amount of standing water and mud.

Water supplier Affinity Water were urgently dispatched to the scene, at the junction with The Drive, and were able to clear up some of the water.

A section of the road remained flooded at around 9am - but the water was low enough for drivers to be allowed to pass through so Watling Street was not shut.

But the flooding caused delays both in and out of Radlett.

No properties or shops appear to have been flooded.

Residents woke this morning with low water pressure or no water at all and Affinity Water has published a list of streets affected by water supply.

People have also been asked to not use electrical appliances.

An update on Affinity Water's website at 9.25am said: "Our technician has assessed the burst; a repair team have been called and are on their way to carry out the necessary work in order to restore supplies to normal.

"During this time we ask you not to use any electrical appliances that require a water supply, for example washing machines or dishwashers and to conserve water from storage tanks during the time your water supply is interrupted.

"If you do still have a supply, we would advise you to store some water for drinking, in case your water has to be switched off for a repair to be completed. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused."

An update at 11.25am said: "Our repair team are now on site, however due to complications with the repair and a potential safety risk, we have requested Herts Traffic Management attend and ensure the area is safe before our work can continue. Once we have confirmation that it is safe to proceed a further update will be provided.

"We are sorry for the disruption to your water supply and thank you for your patience at this time."

Roadworks will need to take place in Watling Street requiring multi-way traffic lights.
