Extinction Rebellion (XR) will be holding a protest in the town this weekend.

The climate protest movement will be protesting against London Luton Airport’s expansion plans during a consultation at the Holywell Community Centre on Saturday, November 23.

Plans for the airport would see an extra terminal built and passenger numbers increased to 32 million per year.

But XR Luton and Watford says the plans are “irresponsible” with the UK committed to reducing emissions to net zero by 2050. It also claims the expansion would also bring a huge rise in noise pollution, air pollution and traffic, as well as building over Wigmore Park.

It says that so far proposals have been about how to grow the airport but the movement want there to be considerations about not to expand it as well.

The movement will raise objections to growth plans in a “colourful fashion” and “present facts” about the climate impact of aviation on boards outside the centre.

Luton Airport has said it is keen to hear the views “of as many people as possible” on its plans and has encouraged people to fill in its online survey.

It has also said environmental impact is an “absolute priority”.

The protest will start at 11am and will last until around 2pm.
