People fell in a moment of silence in respect for the lives lost in the line of duty.

The Mayor of St Albans, Councillor Janet Smith, led tributes to Britain’s armed forces at two Remembrance ceremonies on Sunday (November 10) and Monday (November 11).

Cllr Smith attended the Remembrance Sunday service at the City’s War Memorial near St Peter’s Church.

A parade before the memorial service featured representatives from Air, Sea and Army cadets, the guiding and scout movements, and members of emergency services.

Reverend Canon Mark Dearnley led the service at the memorial, just before the two-minute silence at 11am.

The Mayor laid a wreath along with the Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Robert Voss CBE.

On Armistice Day on November 11, another gathering took place at the War Memorial to mark a two-minute silence for the lives lost in World War Two.

After the minutes of silence, the Mayor said: “I was very proud to lead our community as it paid its respects to those who gave their lives in two World Wars and other conflicts while serving their country.

“I was particularly stuck by the number of people of all ages and backgrounds who took part in the Remembrance Sunday parade and multi-faith service.

“It was a huge turn-out showing that our whole community had got together to support the brave men and women of our Armed Forces.”
