The report that Harlow is shortlisted to benefit from the Government £1 billion Future High Streets Fund is really welcome news.

A share of the fund amounting to up to £25 million would give a tremendous boost to our Harlow shopping centres if imaginatively planned.

But one would hope that a successful bid would not be on the basis of development of the town centre only, but inclusive of each of the area retail centres also, which are badly in need of a boost. In particular, Old Harlow High Street is sorely in need of investment.

Support from large recent residential developments, closer to Old Harlow than is the town centre, could well restore the fortunes of the high street to the thriving and vibrant retail hub it once was. Concentration of funds to the town centre only would let down the wider population of Harlow, so let’s see any funding shared out.
