A store which shut due to a rat infestation has reopened after environmental health officers revisited the site.

The Bees Supermarket in Shenley Road, Borehamwood, was closed temporarily after a routine inspection by Hertsmere Borough Council last Thursdsy found evidence of a rat infestation.

On Tuesday this week, officers revisited the shop and were satisfied that the imminent risk to public health had been removed.

During Thursday's inspection, officers found a serious accumulation of rat droppings, food debris, and rubbish and the supermarket was served with a hygiene emergency prohibition notice.

A council spokesman said: "We can confirm that The Bees Supermarket in Shenley Road, Borehamwood re-opened on Tuesday 20 August after Environmental Health officers visited the site and were satisfied that the imminent risk to public health had been removed.

"The case was heard before St Albans Magistrates Court on Wednesday where the magistrate made a declaration ratifying the council’s actions and the defendant was told they would have to pay the council’s full legal costs of £3,242.

"Though the imminent risk to public health has been removed, officers will continue to work with the business owner to ensure further improvements are carried out at the premises and that staff are able to meet food hygiene regulations."
