Neighbours say they are worried about the impact antisocial behaviour is having elderly people who live close to a derelict site in Borehamwood.

Concerns have been raised about a number of run down homes in Warenford Way which neighbours say has become a “centre for criminal activity”.

Last week, police were called to the site after reports of suspicious activity in the area. Several officers were called to the scene after a witness said they saw two men allegedly stealing items from the building site.

Borehamwood Times:

The homes are set to be demolished and the Clarion Housing-owned site will become 43 new homes which will all be for social rent.

Currently the area, which has been empty for two years, is bordered up while some of the windows have been smashed.

Cllr Michelle Vince was walking by when police were at the scene. She then said she spoke to neighbours.

They told her “things were happening on a regular basis” and that they were “sick of it now” and they were beginning to “worry” about elderly residents who live close by.

It’s been suggested that the rundown site has become a hotspot for antisocial behaviour.

Cllr Jeremy Newmark added: “Clarion makes a vast amount of profit every year and is in a position to afford appropriate security measures to safeguard these properties.”

But Hertfordshire Constabulary say they are not aware of ongoing issues.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “We work closely with Clarion Housing and we are not aware of any ongoing issues that have been reported to police. If anyone has any information about drugs or anti-social behaviour, please report it to us on 101 or report online.”

A Clarion Housing spokesman said: “Clarion is committed to delivering much needed affordable housing in Borehamwood and we recently submitted our proposals to the local authority to deliver 43 social rented homes on the Warenford Way site.

“Subject to gaining planning permission, our desire is to get building work underway on this all affordable scheme as soon as possible.

“We work closely with the police on issues relating to antisocial behaviour. We have secured the site and will be carrying out additional security checks to provide further reassurance.”

• A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft in connection with the incident on April 3. He was given a caution.

This article previously included an image of two vehicles, including a white van. Although the article stated the image was taken back in March, the Borehamwood Times would like to make clear the vehicles have no connection with the Windsor Close site.
