More than 2,500 people have signed a petition to save a post office.

Hertsmere Labour launched a campaign to help postmaster Amir Doha who could be facing a rent increase of more than 100 per cent for his business in Aycliffe Road, Borehamwood.

Mr Doha was told his rent would rise from £6,000 to £13,000 – although Hertsmere Borough Council said discussions had since taken place to reduce that amount.

Mr Doha, 67, previously said the post office would be “unlikely to survive” at all if the rent was increased.

When Cowley Hill councillors heard about Mr Doha’s situation, they immediately began a petition. Within a couple of weeks, 2,629 supporters signed the petition both online and in person.

Cllr’s Jeremy Newmark and Michelle Vince accompanied Mr Doha to Hertsmere Borough Council’s offices in Borehamwood last Wednesday to formally hand the petition in.

It reads: “Please find enclosed a petition related to Hertsmere’s proposed rent increase that threatens to close my business, the post office at 136 Aycliffe Road, Borehamwood, WD6 4DY,” and is signed by the postmaster.

The council will now have to consider and respond to the petition.
