Mystery meat has been seized and destroyed from a greengrocers.

A large quantity of meat was taken and destroyed by Food Safety Officers after Magazin Romanesc in Walthamstow was unable to prove where it had come from.

Officers visited the shop in High Street, Walthamstow, on January 8 and found items including a whole partridge, pheasant and deer carcasses being offered for sale.

These mysterious meats were being sold alongside frozen steaks, sausages and fillets.

When questioned, the owners were unable to prove where the meat had been sourced and subsequently the items were seized.

Thames Magistrates' Court ordered that the food was destroyed and awarded Waltham Forest Council £1056.

Cllr Clyde Loakes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: "Time and time again officers have taken proactive steps to keep consumers safe by taking action against owners of food businesses who do not take their responsibilities seriously.

"By not keeping their premises clean and storing food safely they endanger the health of their customers – and they also endanger their livelihoods and reputations.

"Shopper and diners can check the food hygiene rating of any restaurant or food business by using the Food Standards Agency’s online food hygiene rating tool before they eat. It only takes one minute – please do use this tool and support businesses who do things the right way."
