Watford Women’s Centre will create a new heritage archive showcasing the lives of the women involved in its 30-year history – and it is looking for contributions.

The organisation, which is supported by funding from the Heritage Lottery and based on Market Street, plans to present their findings at an exhibition this April.

The project will bring into focus the lives of women from Watford across generations – from those who campaigned to secure a safe space for women experiencing domestic abuse and rape in the 1980s, to volunteers and supporters in the present day.

The exhibition will draw on a cross section of contributors including founding members and staff - culminating with displays, spoken word performances, community arts and media installations.

Fiona Miller, chief executive officer, said: “The women’s centre was the first ever Watford based charity to provide support for victims of domestic violence.

“Over the past 30 years the centre has helped thousands of women and their children move away from harmful relationships and lead independent and productive lives.

“It is hugely important we document and share this legacy that not only celebrates the centre’s achievements but highlights the struggle of women to gain control over their lives throughout the decades.”
