A motorway service station operator planning to develop on Green Belt land near Maple Cross has announced two public exhibitions.

Extra Motorway Services will host two “engagement” meetings in January to hear the public on their proposals to build a new motorway service area between Junction 16 and 17 of the M25.

Precise details of what the service station will offer is still unknown – however, a recent public consultation leaflet seen by the Watford Observer suggests two large parking areas for HGV and car drivers is in Extra’s plans, and proposals for a hotel.

The Liberal Democrats in Three Rivers launched a petition in October contesting the plans, shortly after a similar proposal was made by rival company, Moto at Junction 20, Kings Langley.

Moto’s initial proposal included a 100-bed hotel, a 1,000-space car park, shops and other facilities.

Extra representatives will be answering questions from the public at:

• Maple Cross and West Hyde Community Centre, Longcroft Road, from 1.30pm until 5.30pm, on January 25.

• Chalfont St Peter Community Centre, Gravel Hill, from 11am until 6pm, on January 26.

The operator will also distribute leaflets on January 3 and 4, with details of their proposal and how to comment.

Leader of Three Rivers District Council, Sara Bedford, said: “Although this site is not in Thee Rivers, there is a concern that enabling access via the local road network would lead to further rat-running through Maple Cross and the surrounding communities.

“If this site is given planning permission, I cannot see why further motorway services would be needed at Junction 20 or anywhere else in Three Rivers.”
