The best friend of a woman seriously injured during a hit-and-run outside a supermarket has started a campaign to ensure her Christmas is still special.

Julia Matthews started the emergency GoFundMe page soon after learning her “best friend and colleague” at Tesco, Rickmansworth had sustained a broken back when a hired car was driven at shoppers at around 2pm on Sunday.

Footage on social media showing a blue Citroen C3 trying to get out of the Tesco car park as those inside attempted to flee went viral.

It is believed the incident happened after people were challenged by security staff in Tesco having attempted the theft of alcohol.

During the getaway, "several people" were stuck by the Citroen.

Police have issued a plea to find a blue Citroen C3 with the registration plate KW18 HGK.

Ms Matthews said: “The person injured is my friend and colleague and she shouldn’t have had this happen to her ever, but especially not just before Christmas.

“She should be at home with her family, with her partner and her child enjoying the holiday.

“I’ve created this for all those who have asked for a way to help, to help bring some positivity and love into her life when it has been shattered by selfish people.

“The money will help her with her recovery and help her to enjoy Christmas when she is allowed to go back home.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting ISR 397 of December 23.
