This was a review my wife and I had been looking forward to for some time.

We only live down the road but at the De Vere Latimer you felt miles away from the hum-drum of suburban life, and we had a very relaxing stay.

We checked into our room, number 116, which was a suite of the highest calibre. We had stunning views out over the Chilterns and a telescope included which was a nice touch.

A bottle of Prosecco and a lovely greeting card was also left for us and it was the perfect start to our stay.

Before dinner, we went to use the facilities. This includes a beautifully heated pool, a steam room, sauna and a gym.

We spent an hour or so relaxing in this area and the facilities were clean and spotless.

My wife and I then headed back to the room where we got ready for dinner, which was in the 1838 Restaurant.

The restaurant itself was very elegant and modern with a lovely ambience as we took our seats.

We perused the menu and decided quickly. The bar as well had a host of options on draught if you like lager or ale and an extensive wine list. We plumped for a bottle of South African red which accompanied our dinner very well.

I went for the leek and potato soup for starter and my wife had goats cheese salad. My soup was hot and delicious and a real winter warmer. My wife’s starter was packed full of flavour and met with her approval.

We were eagerly anticipating our mains. I ordered the blade of beef with ox cheek and Louisa had the rump of lamb.

This is where the slight disappointment with our stay happened. My dinner, although tasty, was slightly cold. Louisa’s main should have been served pink but was well done.

Although we finished our mains, that was our only sticking point. The dessert of pecan pie and banoffee ice cream was a real winner and although service was slightly sluggish, you can forgive the team as it was exceptionally busy.

We finished dinner and moved onto the luxurious drawing room and bar for a nightcap before we headed to bed.

I have to say the room was divine, the bed exceptionally comfortable and the whole suite was very grand and stately.

After a very good night’s sleep, we headed down to breakfast. The buffet experience was a real winner, with every food item piping hot as well as the usual array of continental breakfast options.

I had a full English, which was an absolute treat, and even helped myself to seconds! Don’t tell the wife!

We then checked out and bid farewell to a really good experience.
