The A1 has reopened after investigation work into a fatal crash was completed.

The carriageway was opened by police shortly before 5pm having been shut for more than six hours after a Toyota Hilux struck a lorry which was in a layby.

The A1 had been closed northbound between Stirling Corner and the M25 after emergency services were initially called at 10.10am.

The driver of the Toyota died at the scene. The lorry driver was not injured.

An air ambulance and numerous ambulances and fire engines attended.

Police are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who may have dash cam footage. Anyone with any information should contact police on 1010 quoting ISR 229 of November 15.

There are no delays northbound on the A1 between Apex Corner and the N25, however there are queues southbound approaching Stirling Corner.

There are also queues on Hendon Wood Lane particularly towards Barnet Gate, and on the A411 towards Stirling Corner from Elstree.
