A football club which was trashed by vandals has won a cash prize which will allow the team to get back on its feet.

Borehamwood 2000 FC, who play at Pursley Playing Fields in Shenley, were rocked after hooligans destroyed the club’s equipment and changing facilities, ripping tiles from the roof, breaking locks and ruining the dug outs.

Selco Builders Warehouse have been running a scheme, Selco Stars, which gives way two prizes of £500 worth of building materials and Borehamwood 2000 has been named as one of the first winners.

Sandra Langham, fundraising secretary at Borehamwood 2000 FC, said: “We are thrilled to win this prize from Selco Builders Warehouse.

“The children who play on our pitch were immensely upset by the vandalism at the club. We want to rebuild the facilities for them and this money will go a long way to helping us achieve that.

“We also have big plans for the future so will be doing everything we can to secure the big £5,000 prize.”

Selco are running the scheme monthly and in March next year, all winners will go into a public vote for a chance to win £5,000 in cash.

Carine Jessamine, Selco marketing director, said: “It’s fantastic to have Selco Stars up and running and to be able to announce our first winners.

“It’s hard to believe that people would go and destroy the facilities of a football club. Anything we can do to help these volunteers return the club to its original state is great.”
